Knightstown

Knightstown was built because a processing yard and harbour were needed to export slate from the islands great quarry. It is a laid out village, designed by the Scottish engineer, Alexander Nimmo, at the request of the Knight of Kerry. It was built in the early years of the last century and is typical of a laid out landlord's village. Early this century, when the island was at its most prosperous, Knightstown had a good hotel, a Cable Station, the Slate Yard, two churches, a hospital, a courthouse, a jail, a police barracks, a Mason's Lodge and a Fisherman's Hall. Today it boasts several restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, a diving centre, an antique shop, a local museum and a tourist office.

During the summer months there is a car ferry which has a continuous service, to and fro, from the island to the mainland.
